Write a story with Keneth Oppel

Are you in Grades 4 – 6? Do you live in Canada? Do you like to write and draw? Then I have the perfect opportunity for you! World Literacy of Canada is starting the Write/Right to Read initiative for kids who are interested in becoming a global citizen. This is a national bilingual writing and drawing contest open to students in grades 4 -6. Interested? Read on!

Fabulous Canadian author Kenneth Oppel has written the beginning of a story and YOU are invited to finish it! The submission deadline is August 28th, 2009 and you just need to finish it with your own 300 word story that works with the theme of tolerance and acceptance. You can find out all of the information right here at the World Literacy of Canada website.

Here’s the opening by Kenneth Oppel:

Matt Cruse jumped out and hurriedly inspected his airship. He was lucky it hadn’t been more damaged in the crash landing. He shaded his eyes against the sun and saw, in the wavering distance, what looked like a small village. He didn’t know where he was, or what language the people would speak. All he knew was that he’d need their help if he had any hope of getting his ship back in the sky……

Funbrain!

I am always on the lookout for some fun and educational sites for kids and I just found a new one! FunBrain.com has all kinds of educational games, reading, books, fun facts etc and it calls itself the internet’s #1 Education site for kids and teachers. While I was there, I noticed that it included a great page about the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney, which is very popular in our library. They include a new post every day from the diary and you can also follow the link to the Wimpy Kid blog, which is fun and fascinating!

Family Literacy Day World Record Attempt

Have you ever wanted to be a part of a world record attempt? Family Literacy Day is a great idea from the people of ABC Canada to get us all reading! ABC Canada is going to try to break the world record for the most children reading with an adult (multiple locations) on January 23rd and 24th, 2009. Just about anyone can participate and all you have to do is register ahead of time and read 5 stories by Canadian author Robert Munsch during the time period selected. So gather some friends, find some children and go out and get the Robert Munsch stories required and you can be a part of this great World Record Attempt!

Canada Day Poster Challenge

Each year, the Canada Day Poster Challenge invites students aged 5 – 18 to design a poster that illustrates their pride in their country, and this year, the theme is “WITH GLOWING HEARTS”. As the 2010 Olympics and Paralympic Winter Games quickly approach, young people are encouraged to create designs that explore this theme using images of sport as well as those reflecting Canada’s cultural diversity and heritage.

They have a website that you can visit to find out more information, although as I write this, the 2009 information is still not up. But you can read about last year’s contest and see the winning poster’s artist. (The winner is posted above.)
